Get fluent in AI discovery

A plain-language guide to how AI answers work, what to measure, and how to move it. Read it start to finish, or jump to what you need.

Part 1

Basics

Start here. What AI discovery is, how an answer actually gets built, and how AEO, GEO and SEO differ.

Start with the mental model

Four ideas that make everything else click. Read these first.

The shift

Why AI visibility is its own problem

Assistants answer in a paragraph and a short list of sources, not ten blue links. If your brand is not in that paragraph, you are off the shortlist before a buyer ever reaches your site. That is a different game from ranking on Google, and it needs its own measurement.

AEO

What answer-engine optimization means

AEO is making sure answer engines like ChatGPT and Perplexity name and recommend you for the questions your buyers ask. It is less about keywords and more about being present, accurate, and well-sourced inside the answer itself.

GEO

What generative-engine optimization means

GEO is earning presence inside generated answers by shaping the sources those models read: the pages, reviews, and community threads engines cite. Fix the sources, and the answer follows.

Sources

How AI answers choose their sources

Engines lean on a mix of high-authority pages, comparison content, and community discussion. Which sources carry weight differs by engine and by question, so the same brand can be cited in one answer and absent from another. Ansyra shows you which is which.

How an AI answer gets built

Every assistant does roughly the same four things. Understanding the sequence tells you exactly where to intervene.

Retrieve

The engine gathers candidate sources for the question, from its own index, a live web search, or what it learned in training.

Read

It reads those pages, reviews, and threads and pulls out the facts, claims, and names that seem to answer the question.

Shortlist

It writes one answer and decides which brands to name and recommend. That shortlist is the thing you want to be on.

Cite

It links a handful of sources as its reasons. Being one of those citations is how you show up as evidence, not just a mention.

The shortlist and the citations are the two moments that decide whether a buyer hears about you.

AEO vs GEO vs SEO

Three related jobs, often confused. SEO ranks a page, AEO gets you named in the answer, GEO shapes the sources the answer is made of. You need all three, measured together.

The lines blur on purpose: Google’s AI Overviews read from search, so classic SEO still feeds your AI presence.

Part 2

Go deeper

Where each engine looks, what to measure, the full article library and the vocabulary.

How each engine sources its answers

No two engines ground an answer the same way, which is why the same brand can be cited by one and absent from another. A high-level read on where each one looks.

Live web

Perplexity

Runs a live web search for almost every question and shows numbered citations inline, so the sources it trusts are visible.

Model + search

ChatGPT

Answers from its trained model, and with search on, grounds the reply in live web results and links them.

Google Search

Google AI Overviews

Generated from Google Search, so your classic rankings and indexed pages still feed what the overview says.

Google Search

Gemini

Google’s assistant. It grounds answers with Google Search when it needs current facts and can cite them.

Model + search

Claude

Answers from its trained model, and with web search enabled, pulls and cites live sources for current questions.

X + web

Grok

xAI’s assistant. It leans on real-time posts from X alongside web results, so community discussion carries weight.

Bing

Copilot

Built on Bing, so Bing’s index and web results shape what it says and which pages it cites. Opt-in preview in Ansyra.

What to measure

Five things worth tracking. The first is the headline; the rest tell you why it moved.

Presence

AI Presence

How strongly AI answers feature your brand across the questions you track, per engine. Your own presence, measured from real answers. The one number you move.

Evidence

Citations & sources

Which domains each engine cites, where you already appear, and the high-authority pages you are missing from.

Framing

Sentiment & accuracy

Not just whether you were mentioned, but how you were framed, and whether the engine got its facts about you right.

Field

Competitor gap

Who else makes the shortlist for the same question, so you know exactly where a rival is winning and you are not.

Search

AI Overview rank

Where you sit in Google’s generated answer and the results beneath it, because that surface reads from search.

Part 3

FAQs

The questions people ask most often about being found, cited and recommended by AI answers.

Frequently asked

Is this just SEO with a new name?
No. SEO is about ranking a page in a list of links. AI discovery is about being named and cited inside a written answer, which is chosen differently and measured differently. They overlap (Google’s AI Overviews read from search), so Ansyra tracks both, but the unit of measurement is the question a buyer asks, not the keyword.
Which engines does Ansyra track?
The engines your buyers actually ask, including ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude, and Grok, plus Google’s AI Overviews. Coverage grows over time, and the product marks any engine that is on the roadmap rather than live, so you always know what is measured.
Do you use real data or estimates?
Real answers. Ansyra runs your actual tracked questions across the engines and reads what they return. Where a number is modeled rather than directly measured (some demand and volume figures), it is labelled as such. We do not invent case studies, logos, or metrics anywhere in the product or on this site.
How often do AI answers change?
Often enough to matter. Engines update models, re-crawl the web, and weight sources differently over time, so an answer can shift week to week. Ansyra re-checks automatically on a regular cadence (weekly by default, daily on Agency and Enterprise) and ties movement to what you shipped.
Do I need to connect anything to get started?
No. Enter your brand and the questions you care about and Ansyra can measure where you stand across engines. Connecting Google Search Console, GA4, or a CMS adds a Google-verified layer and lets you publish fixes, but none of it is required to see your first AI Presence. Try the free technical readiness audit or a free AEO report with nothing to connect.
What countries does Ansyra support?
Ansyra is available in 29 markets. In Asia-Pacific: India, Singapore, Hong Kong, Australia, Malaysia and Indonesia. In the Middle East: the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia. In North America: the United States and Canada. In the UK and Europe: the United Kingdom and 18 EU and EEA countries. Each brand is measured in its own country and language, so a US brand is scored on US answers rather than a default market. To cover several markets, run a separate workspace per market, which is how agencies and enterprises run many brands across many countries.
Is Ansyra only for regulated industries?
No. Ansyra is a horizontal AEO and GEO platform for any brand that wants to be found in AI answers. Regulatory intelligence is an optional layer you switch on per brand, not a requirement to use the product. Nothing screens a brand until you pick the regulator that applies to it: market and industry alone never trigger it. The enforcing packs cover financial services (SEC, FINRA and CFPB, FCA and ESMA, ASIC, MAS, SEBI, IRDAI and RBI, and the Gulf) and healthcare (CDSCO and NMC), scoped to the chosen market and industry, and every screen is advisory, never legal sign-off.
Does Ansyra generate or optimise content?
Yes. Ansyra turns a visibility or source gap into a brief, drafts it against your approved facts and brand voice, moves it through review and compliance, and publishes to your own CMS across 10 targets: WordPress, Webflow, Shopify, Contentful, Sanity, HubSpot, Strapi, Ghost, Drupal and Storyblok. It then re-measures the same questions so you see the movement the change produced. AI drafting turns on once your workspace generation key is set.
Does Ansyra track traffic and crawlers from ChatGPT and other AI platforms?
Yes, in two ways. AI referral analytics reads a connected GA4 property to show the sessions ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and other assistants send to your site, and the pages they land on. Treat it as a floor, not the full count, and Google AI Overviews cannot be separated from organic in analytics, so we never guess at them. AI crawler analytics shows which AI bots actually fetched your site once you wire a drop-in snippet, on API plans (Agency and up). A free readiness audit also reports the crawler policy you declare, separately from live activity.
Does Ansyra track traditional Google and SEO rankings?
Yes. Ansyra tracks your Google positions for the queries you track, records whether each one shows an AI Overview, and reads Search Console data when connected, with bulk keyword CSV import to set up fast. Classic search and AI visibility sit in one view, because Google AI Overviews read from search, so rankings still feed your AI presence.
Does Ansyra analyse product visibility in AI shopping and recommendations?
Ansyra has Shopping Visibility, which reads the Google Shopping grid for your tracked queries and records where your products sit, which sellers own the grid, and the position, title, seller and price of what ranks. It measures Google’s Shopping surface, which is what AI assistants increasingly draw shopping answers from. It is not a full product-catalog or SKU-level analytics tool, and we say so rather than overclaim.
Can we control whether AI models read or train on our site?
Partly, and it is a policy choice, not just a technical one. robots.txt and per-crawler rules let you allow or block specific bots, and files like llms.txt help answer engines find your best content. Blocking training crawlers is a legitimate decision, but blocking answer or search crawlers usually hurts your visibility. The readiness audit shows exactly who you allow today.
How is my data protected?
Each tenant’s data is isolated at the database level with row-level security, and secrets are encrypted at rest. Sign-in and recovery flows are CSRF-guarded and every page ships hardened browser headers. More detail is on the Trust page.

Glossary

The words we use across the product, defined once.

Answer engine
An assistant that replies with a written answer instead of a list of links: ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity, Grok.
AEO
Answer-engine optimization: earning a named, accurate, well-sourced place inside AI answers for the questions buyers ask.
GEO
Generative-engine optimization: shaping the sources models read so your brand is built into the generated text.
AI Presence
How strongly AI answers feature your brand across the questions you track, per engine. It measures your own presence, not a market share. Formerly called AI Share of Voice.
Citation
A source an AI answer draws from and links to. Being cited is how you show up as a reason, not just a name.
Grounding
When an engine backs its answer with retrieved sources (live search or an index) rather than memory alone.
AI Overview
Google’s generated answer above the classic results. It reads from search, so search still matters.
Hallucination
A confident but wrong claim an engine makes. Tracking accuracy catches it before your buyers do.
Sentiment
How an answer frames you: positively, neutrally, or negatively, separate from whether you were mentioned.
Source authority
How much weight engines give a domain when they build an answer. High-authority pages move more answers.
llms.txt
An emerging root-level file that gives answer engines a curated map of your most important content.
Technical readiness
Whether your site presents the technical signals crawlers need to discover and access it: robots.txt, sitemap, indexability, and your declared AI crawler policy.
Prompt / query
A real question a buyer asks. Ansyra tracks these as the unit of measurement, not just keywords.
Scan credit
One AI answer, cost-weighted by engine. Your plan’s monthly pool sets how much you can measure.
